Jennifer Lawrence Likely Won’t Return to Hunger Games, Says Producer: ‘I Think Her Story Is Complete’

The odds may not be in favor of Hunger Games fans getting more of Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen.

While the actress recently said she would be open to revisiting the character — whom she played in 2012’s The Hunger Games and its three sequels, based on Suzanne Collins’ book series — producer Nina Jacobson says Katniss’ reappearance in a future installment would be up to the author.

“If Suzanne has something to say, then she’ll write a book about it,” Jacobson, 58, said in an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment published Tuesday surrounding the upcoming release of the prequel film The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, based on Collins’ 2020 novel.

“Honestly, as much as I love Katniss, I think her story is complete,” the producer added. “And I think that Suzanne feels that her story is complete.”

“But if that changes, and Suzanne has something she wants to say, and it involves Katniss, then I would be thrilled,” Jacobson added. “But really, any chance to be back in this world, and lead with [director Francis Lawrence] and Suzanne, I would take regardless of who it was about.”

Lawrence, 52, is of a similar mind, telling Yahoo! Entertainment of Collins, 61, “If for whatever reason she had some thematic idea that made sense to tell another Katniss story, I’d be in, and then I’m sure Jen would be in.”

“But it really all comes from theme and idea, and Suzanne,” the director added.

While promoting her comedy No Hard Feelings in June, Lawrence, 33, told Variety she would be “totally” open to reprising her role of Katniss.

“Oh, my God — totally!” the Oscar winner said when asked if she would ever want to pick up her character’s bow and arrow once more. “If Katniss could ever come back into my life, 100%.”

The forthcoming Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes stars Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler.

The movie follows an 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (played by Donald Sutherland in the original series and in the new film by Blyth), who would eventually rise to become the tyrannical president of Panem.

Also among the cast are Hunter Schafer, Peter Dinklage, Viola Davis, Jason Schwartzman and Josh Andrés Rivera.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is in theaters Nov. 17.
