Behind Heidi Klum’s People StyleWatch Cover Look

With three decades of modeling experience, there’s almost no look Heidi Klum hasn’t tried or can’t pull off — but she seemed especially at home in the ’90s-inspired cool girl looks her stylists Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn pulled for her People StyleWatch cover. Q. How did you pull these looks in particular?
We curated these looks by considering Heidi’s fun and unique personality and the theme of the shoot.  We focused on pieces that accentuated her natural beauty while staying true to the creative vision …. a little bit preppy and a little bit rock ‘n roll.

What’s the secret to balancing an editorial look with Heidi’s own style?
The key is finding that perfect intersection between the editorial concept and Heidi’s personal style preferences. We aim to incorporate elements that resonate with her, making sure she feels comfortable and confident while pushing the boundaries of fashion.

How much input does Heidi like to give — and how much do you just take it away?
Heidi is actively involved in the styling process. We value her input and work collaboratively to create looks that reflect her vision and identity while also bringing our expertise to enhance the overall aesthetic.

Anything you know she will absolutely never wear, or anything you always have on set because she loves it?
There is nothing that Heidi won’t try. She loves to take fashion risks and always loves to make a bold statement. This is why we love working with her so much!

What was your favorite thing she wore?
While we loved all the looks, Our favorite was the Tommy Hilfiger look with the wool plaid shirt jacket and hat. It perfectly encapsulated the shoot’s concept and showcased Heidi’s charisma.

How can someone not on a photoshoot translate this look into every day? What are the big style takeaways from the shoot?
To translate Heidi’s style into everyday fashion, consider incorporating statement pieces, mixing textures, and embracing a blend of classic and contemporary elements. Confidence and comfort are key takeaways from our approach.

How did you decide on the beauty looks for the day?
It’s always a collaboration … I personally always draw inspiration from the fashion.

I have also known Heidi for so long — 20 years! — so I know what she likes but more importantly, what looks good on her. She has own ideas of what she should look like on that day, but she’s always open to suggestions and trusts us.

Having started her career as a model, she is used to looking different all the time and is not afraid to take risks, even if it means her being outside of her comfort zone.

Is there anything she says no to?
If it makes sense for the story, she will always be up for anything. We have seen her throughout the years looking completely different in various magazines. I have done editorial with her where she literally wore no makeup at all, but she will also wear crazy colors, glitter … She actually enjoys looking different all the time! But as a general rule, I love to play with her eyes. Heidi loves lashes, that’s one thing I always make sure to have with Heidi.

What were some of the key products from the shoot?
The first look was all about fall colors and giving her eyes a ’90s vibe; the Dior 5 Couleurs eyeshadow palette in 439 Copper was perfect for that, paired with Dior Overcurl Mascara in black.

The second look was all about the lips. I used my favorite red lipstick by Dior called Rouge Dior Forever 999 with the Dior Lip Contour 080 Red Smile.

How can readers try this look at home without a pro on hand?
Anyone can wear the first look; maybe a toned-down version for every day, but the eye shadow palette I used is actually very flattering and the colors are very easy to wear. Just concentrate on applying the colors on the eyelids and blending the color at the crease without going all the way to the eyebrows.

For look number two, a red lip is always very chic. I recommend for an “everyday” look to keep the eye makeup very bare, so it’s just about the lips. That might feel less overwhelming.

What was the most memorable moment from the day?
A shoot with Heidi is always a fun one. She loves to have a good time and goof around. We always play music; she loves to sing and dance.
